What We Bring
A Black History Month Community Clay Project
Service Description
This February, we are making one vessel…together. What We Bring is a month-long participatory clay project rooted in gathering, reflection, and shared presence. Over the course of February, a single large-scale ceramic vessel will be built slowly in the studio, shaped by many hands. Beginning February 1, visitors are invited to contribute to the vessel’s form by rolling coils, assisting with structure, and participating in the quiet labor of building. During this phase, participants may also choose to write a word or reflection on paper. These written offerings are gently enclosed within the vessel as it is built, held inside the form, unseen, as part of its interior. The surface of the vessel remains untouched until the final gathering. On February 28, we come together to decorate the exterior with symbols and marks representing what we bring what we carry, release, honor, or become. This project is about process, not perfection. About holding, not displaying. About what lives inside, and what we choose to share. Holding the Whole Thing The vessel created through What We Bring is intentionally large, beyond the scale of a standard studio firing. As part of this work, we are seeking a firing partner: a studio, institution, or kiln space interested in helping carry this communal piece through its final transformation. This request is part of the work itself. Participation Options Build With Us Saturdays & Sundays, 11 AM–12 PM Help form the vessel through coil-building and quiet making. Optional written offerings may be enclosed within the form. Return + Witness Participants are welcome to return across multiple weekends to follow the vessel’s growth. Final Gathering: Marking the Surface February 28, 11 AM–1 PM Decorate the vessel directly with symbols and marks representing what we bring. Passes Available: Single Session Hold the Vessel is a support only offering for those who feel connected to this project and want to contribute to its making. Your contribution helps sustain the materials, time, and labor involved in creating a large-scale communal ceramic work and supports the search for an appropriate kiln space for its final firing. No physical attendance is required. Your support is part or what allows this work to exist.
