Black Water is a singular, original ceramic artwork—one of one—standing 24 inches tall and formed from richly pigmented black clay. Its powerful silhouette is layered with high-fire glazes in burnt orange, blood red, and deep blue, evoking both fire and ocean, trauma and transcendence.
Hand-carved into the surface is a tactile topography—a narrative map that can be felt as much as seen. These markings chart an imagined sensory journey from the darkness of cargo holds to the disposal sites in the Atlantic, where countless souls were lost during the Middle Passage—whether by violence, sickness, or chosen resistance in the waves. Each groove and texture tells a part of the unspoken story.
The flowing glazes represent the blending of many African tribes into a singular identity through shared survival, cultural resistance, and transformation in the Americas.
* Orange and red: fire, bloodlines, endurance.
